John Willsteed

Professional Bio

John Willsteed is a musician and academic. He toured the world through the late 80s in The Go-Betweens and has recorded and performed with many bands. He has been a guitarist in award-winning Brisbane group Halfway since 2011.
An award-winning composer and sound editor with over 90 film and television credits, John is a Senior Lecturer in Music at Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane and sits on the boards of both Feral Arts and Queensland Music Festival. He has presented papers nationally and internationally, and his academic interest is centred in concepts of curation and story-telling particularly in relation to Brisbane’s punk and post-punk scene.
His most recent publication is Electronic Cities: Music, Policies and Space in the 21st Century edited by Sebastien Darchen, Damien Charrieras and John Willsteed (Palgrave Macmillan, 2021). Halfway’s 7th album is being recorded in the southern winter of 2021, and the Bob Weatherall/Halfway/William Barton collaboration Restless Dream will be released and performed in late 2021. John’s presentation ‘The Sounds of Goodbye’ will examine the relationship between community and institutional archives in researching Brisbane’s punk and post-punk music/art scenes.
